What a great week! We finished our short stories unit, and we had a cumulative exam over all of the literary elements and the practical application of them within the stories. We also worked on different types of sentences, predicate nominatives, and predicative adjectives. Sacred writing time continues to be a daily adventure for the class along with weekly close reading articles. The students are doing an excellent job with the close reading of the articles of the week and will soon be expected to complete those primarily outside of class time.
The Book Fair begins next week. The students will be visiting the fair on Monday. They will also have the opportunity to attend any other day of the week if they have money and already know what they want to buy. However, the class will only attend and browse on Monday.
We will begin Tom Sawyer on Tuesday. While this is a very challenging text, the students soon catch on to the dialect and learn to recognize the different superstitions, prejudices, and habits of the time period. Once the novel is completed, most students feel a strong sense of accomplishment. I'm looking forward to sharing this experience with them!
Finally, I'm sharing a couple photos from our field trip on Friday. We had a great time watching the Maze Runner at Landmark Cinemas. The students identified many of the differences between the movie and the novel. While the movie was enjoyed by all, I'm confident that the students realized that the book is most always better than the movie! We also lucked out with a perfect day to eat lunch at the park. I think the kids all had a good time. I thoroughly enjoyed this day with the students. They were well-behaved, respectful, and polite!
